Director, Ireland’s Travelling Marionette Theatre
Moon & Sixpence Puppet Theatre

Having “rested” for some twenty years, Ireland’s travelling marionette (string puppet) theatre was relaunched in 2012. The origins of the Moon & Sixpence go back to the early 1980s, as the brainchild of Martin and his fellow Tipperary native, Pat Lanigan-Ryan.
Originally based in Thurles, the two friends set up Ireland’s only travelling marionette theatre to visit schools and festivals in the four corners of Ireland. The enterprise played to each of their strengths. Pat is a gifted craftsman, whose attention to detail has been the hallmark of the miniature worlds in which the Moon and Sixpence marionettes live their lives. Martin’s interest in young people’s theatre was evident in his focus on children’s communication for his university dissertation. This interest continues today through his work as a lecturer at Dublin City University, providing a module in “Puppetry & Communication”.
